Pace III"Pace III, the brand new Tripp designed fiberglass Columbia 50, showed her heels to the biggest fleet in ocean racing history by winning first over-all and first in Class B in the 1966 Newport to Ensenada International Yacht Race. With a total of 536 yachts in the starting lineup, Pace III, skippered by her owner Bill Gearhart of the Offshore Cruising Club of Long Beach, California, was the 6th ocean racing entry to finish boat-for-boat. When she dropped anchor in Ensenada harbor there was not a boat there that rated within ten feet of her C.C.A. rating. This time boat speed rather than navigation decided the winner as it was a beat almost all the way down into a 6 to 15 knot southeasterly for 100 miles, reaching and running with a spinnaker for the last 25 miles."
