Ernie Chipman's Columbia 50 Cygnus passes Diamond Head on the way to the finish of the 1969 Transpac race to Hawaii. A chemical engineer for Productol Chemical Co. in Long Beach, Mr. Chipman was a true gentleman of the first order. In his retirement he lived in La Jolla, CA, but every year took the boat back to Long Beach and from there for frequent trips to Santa Catalina, where he maintained a mooring. Mr. Chipman owned and loved Cygnus for about 40 years, moving on to new horizons in 2006 at the age of 90.
Charles Hathaway's Gem (#10, California Yacht Club) and Ernie Chipman's Cygnus (#11, Long Beach Yacht Club) were regular competitors in the early days. Mr. Hathaway was a well known sportsman who was key to the refounding of California Yacht Club in 1961. He died in 2013 at the age of 87.
